Acrostic: definition

The term ” acrostic ” is said to have appeared in the 16th century and comes from Greek. However,  its use seems to date back to Antiquity, particularly with Quintus Ennius (239 BC), author of the time of the Roman Republic, considered the “father of Latin poetry”. The acrostic is a poem, a stanza (or series of stanzas) that is read vertically from top to bottom and where the first letters of each line, when put together, make up a word or phrase.

First name acrostic: how to do it?

Do you want to teach your child how to perform an acrostic with their first name? It is effortless. All you need is a sheet, a pencil and coloured pencils. He will then write his first name vertically, using a different colour for each letter. Following each note, your minor poet will have to find a word that begins with the said letter. Most often, children use adjectives that define them. Still, he can also use words designating things or animals, such as an exercise that calls on the child’s reflection and imagination.

Your child wants to make an acrostic of his first name using adjectives; here is an example with the first name Oscar to help him understand the exercise and be inspired by it:

  • O is
  • S sensible
  • C harmant
  • In love
  • R êveur

Now that he has understood the instructions, it’s up to him to play!

First name acrostic birthday

The use of acrostic can also be an original and creative way for your offspring to wish the birthday of one of his friends. An exercise that he can decline again by using adjectives to qualify the person to celebrate or, for the older (and motivated). Take the opportunity to send him a letter or even try his hand at poetry by writing verses, with or without rhymes, for each letter composing the words ” happy birthday “.

Here is an example of verses composed in the form of kissed rhymes (ABBA scheme) to wish a birthday :

  • B cells
  • O scar, my dear
  • N ou are celebrating your birthday
  • A succeeded, I take this day
  • N e are friends, and I wanted to tell you I am proud
  • N ll stay for the life I hope,
  • I invincible is our friendship forever
  • V Victoires, happiness, flakes
  • And love, I wish you
  • R ions also every day,
  • S incèrement I think you’re super cool
  • So I can’t wait for a party

  • R equate us soon on this day

And we’re going to have fun!
